Week 1 - Lagos and family

Greetings!!!

My trip to Nigeria began with a flight to Atlanta and then a 10 hour direct flight to Lagos, the commercial capital. I missed my flight to Atlanta because I forgot my wallet at home and the airline had to verify the credit card I purchased my ticket with. I was able to make a roundtrip home to still catch a later flight which got me to Atlanta in time to catch my direct flight to Lagos. We experienced serious turbulence on both flights. Otherwise, my trip was uneventful.

My parents were out of town attending family events so my cousin's husband picked me up from the airport. I spent a few hours with my cousin and her kids before they dropped me off at her older sisters house. I spent pretty much my entire week with my cousin and her family.

Boiled yam with garden egg stew - deliciousness


A luggage basket willed to my grandmother in 1923 by her wealthy aunt. My grandmother was 7 years old and was named by the aunt who willed the basket to her. My cousin had it cleaned and polished twice before displaying it in her living room.

Week 6 - Last week spent in Lagos

Last week of my trip. I came back to Lagos just in time to attend a niece's 5th birthday party. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with many of my cousin's and their kids. More importantly, I was eager to see the nieces and nephews interact, the way my cousin's and I did when we were younger. The party was awesome. As I expected, many cousin's came out and we had a blast. Sadly I didnt take many pictures. We were able to get a picture of all the cousins and their kids. I will need to make sure I get a copy of that to share here. I spent the rest of the weekend with my cousin and her kids. Her oldest, age 9 and I did our best to complete a puzzle I bought for him. He had lost a few pieces since i gave it to him. It was a struggle to get it going and an even bigger struggle to keep him focused especially when it took a while to find the next piece of the puzzle. Week 4 - Back to Lagos

Back to Lagos My dad had a function to attend in Lagos, so I decided to catch a ride back with him. The day before our trip, the car suddenly went off and wouldn’t start. After multiple attempts to start the car and some troubleshooting, we determined the alternator had gone bad. It was dark and we were setting out for Ijero from Ado. We ended up loaning a generator battery from a nearby office to drive the car to a hotel close by. The next morning, we drove the car to some mechanics ‘workshop’ to replace the alternator and fix an issue with the shaft. We then had someone return the generator battery to the office we loaned it from. The mechanic was expecting us since we had called the night before. In a few hours, we were on our way. We had a one hour journey to Ijero to pack what we needed then a four hour journey to Lagos. Week 5 - Visiting Ibadan, Oyo State

Visiting Ibadan is probably the most important part of my trip. The last time I visited, it was for my grandmother's (mother's side) burial. Since then my grandfather who turns 90 later this year, has been without the woman who he said made the impossible possible. So, it was very important for me to spend quality time with him because I can't imagine his new life without his spouse and partner of over 60 years. As my uncle said in passing to me, my grandmother was the one everyone turned to to solve problems. Here is some information about Ibadan. It is the capital of Oyo State and once the capital of the old Western Region back when Nigeria practiced a regional form of government. The city is about an hour and a half drive from Lagos. The city is known for its red tin roofs and the first university in West Africa - the University of Ibadan. I met my grandfather at his house he has lived in since 1981 or so.
